About IH Vancouvers teachers, programs and courses

What kind of training do the IH Vancouver teachers have?
As a member of the IHWO, CLC and CAPLS, all instructors must meet specific teacher training
requirements. Our teachers all possess university degrees, have TESL Canada recognized certification
(www.tesl.ca) and have an average of 6 years teaching experience in the ESL industry.

How many students are in each class?
IH Vancouver has new students every Monday and has students finish every Friday.
The class numbers change weekly depending on students placement tests.
There is a maximum of 13 students per class with an average of 10.

What happens on my first day of classes?
On your first day of classes, you will have a placement test.
The placement test is comprised of reading, grammar, vocabulary, listening and an oral interview.
IH Vancouver has 8 levels of courses so it is very important to find the best level for you!

The placement test is followed by an orientation with valuable information about the school
(ie. Policies, course selection, etc.) and living in Vancouver (ie. Safety, money, medical, etc.).
The placement test begins at 9am on your first day of classes. You should bring a pen or pencil,
a notebook and a copy of your medical insurance coverage.

What is the difference between a Program and a Course?
When you register for IH Vancouver, you will register for a Program.
This means the number of hours per week you wish to study. Students can choose from:
-Semi-Intensive-13.75 hours/week
-Semi-Intensive Plus-20 hours/week
-Intensive-27.5 hours/week
(this is our most popular program and makes up about 80% of our student body)
-Intensive-Plus-35 hours/week

Upon arrival and placement testing, you will be able to choose which Courses you would like to
study. Please click here for a complete list of our course options including General English (8 levels),
Test Preparation, Business English and Electives. Link to Course Chart

Can I change my course any time?
Yes, you may change your course from any Monday. Simply speak to someone in the office before
Friday and your course can change the following Monday. This flexibility allows students to try
different courses depending on their specific language needs and interest.

How can I move up a level?
Students have weekly quizzes and tests. Every 4 weeks all students will sit a Level Test.
The quizzes, level test and teacher evaluations based on attendance, participation, progress etc.
will determine if you are ready to move up to the next level. Every 4 weeks a new schedule is made.

Can I take an official exam (eg. TOEFL, TOEIC, Cambridge) at IH Vancouver?
IH Vancouver is proud to offer the official TOEFL, TOEIC and Cambridge FCE, CAE and BEC exams
in-house. Please contact us in advance if you would like to take these exams at IH Vancouver!

What kind of textbooks will I use?
Each level and each course has up to 3 textbooks. Students borrow textbooks from the school for a
refundable deposit.

Will I get a certificate when I finish?
Yes. Students who have attended at least 80% of their classes will receive a Certificate of Completion
on their last day of school. Please notify the office 1 week in advance if you would like to receive a
certificate.
