About Visas and Immigration

Do I need a visa to come to Canada?
International students may study in Canada for up to 6 months as a visitor (Temporary Resident).
All students who will study for more than 6 months will require a Study Permit.
Citizens of many countries do not require a Visa to come to Canada as a visitor.
For a list of countries whose citizens require a visa for entry to Canada,
please view http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas.html
If you plan to study for more than 6 months, you will need to obtain a Study Permit from a Canadian
embassy/consulate. For a list of Canadian visa offices and to find the one nearest you,
please visit http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/offices/missions.html
Processing times vary from one visa office to the next.
Please contact the Canadian Visa Office nearest you for specific details for your country of citizenship.

What documentation do I need to show when I enter Canada?
When you enter Canada, immigration officials will ask for the following documents:
1. Passport
2. Temporary Resident Visa if required from your country of citizenship
3. Study Permit (if studying for more than 6 months)
4. Bank statement showing sufficient funds for your stay in Canada
5. Official Letter of Acceptance from your school
6. Accommodation information (eg. Host family confirmation)
7. Letter of Custodianship (if under 18 years old and traveling alone)
8. Return airplane ticket

What do I do if I want to study English at IH Vancouver longer?
If you decide to study longer or travel after your studies finish, you can extend your Study Permit
or Temporary Resident Visa in Canada. The IH Vancouver office can help you with the application forms.
You may not change your status from Temporary Resident (visitor) to Study Permit in Canada.
All Study Permits must be applied for outside Canada. Many students do this at the Canadian
Consulate in Seattle, USA.
A US visa may be required for citizens of your country to enter the United States.

Can I work in Canada while I am studying at IH Vancouver?
To work in Canada you must have a valid Work Permit. You cannot work with only a Study Permit or
Temporary Visitor Status. For more details please contact the nearest Canadian embassy/
consulate or view http://www.cic.gc.ca
